The Wise Men Worship Jesus

One Sunday left in 2007, and we will spend it learning about the wise men who followed the star of Bethlehem from the east to find and worship Jesus as the King of the Jews. We’ll take a look at some real gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and find out where they come from and what they mean.

Just as the wise men worshiped Jesus, we can worship Him to. We probably won’t give Him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh (after all, He doesn’t need any of those things now), but we can give Him many other gifts as well…such as our love, our obedience, and our praise.

Join us Sunday for the last part of the Christmas story…and bring a friend!

Simeon and Anna

Next Sunday is day before Christmas Eve. We will have a special video lesson about how a family and their friend learn a little more about the truth of Christmas. Our Bible story will be about Simeon and Anna, two special people who very much wanted to know how God would keep His promise of a Messiah and Savior.

Several in our class will be traveling to other places to celebrate Christmas. We will be praying for you as you and your families travel. Please remember to think about the true meaning of Christmas, as we celebrate Jesus’ birthday. Maybe you can offer to read the Christmas story from Luke 2 for your family this year.

See you Sunday if you are at home…and have a really great Christmas!

Jesus Is Born!

The time is right! The world is at peace (for a short while); everyone can speak the Greek language; God has made a promise, and now it’s time to keep it!

God gets all the pieces of the puzzle together. He gets Caesar Augustus, Emperor of Rome, to arrange for Mary and Joseph to have to go to Bethlehem for Jesus to be born, just as He told Micah. The Magi study the stars and see that a King is being born, so they start their journey to Bethlehem. All the angels are waiting for their cues to tell the Good News to the shepherds. The whole world is waiting for the Savior to be born.

This Sunday we will focus on the birth of Jesus, the events that we actually celebrate on Christmas Eve night. It’s the event that started year 1 on our the calendar system we use today (A.D. stands for Latin Anno Domini, meaning the year of our Lord. Jesus fulfilled more than 300 Old Testament prophecies, and His birth began a life which showed us what God is like and how to live as God intended, and a death which would pay for our sins and win us eternal life.

Let’s celebrate Jesus’ birthday together this week! It is our Christmas party, so please try to bring a friend to join with us. We will be making a special Christmas tree ornament, and you will receive a wrapped Christmas gift as well as share our refreshments, view and hear the Christmas story, and sing some of your favorite Christmas songs.

See you Sunday!

Angels, Angels, Angels

As we learned last week, Jesus was born at exactly the right time in God’s plan, with the world at peace for the only time in history because of the Roman Empire and their Pax Romana, one language used by most of the people in the world (Greek), and the Jewish Synagogues in almost every town where Jesus would be invited to teach.

But another thing we see about Jesus’ birth is that there were angels everywhere! The angels knew what was going to happen, and they must have been waiting excitedly for hundreds of years to get ready for Jesus’ birth. From angels telling John the Baptist’s father Zachariah that he would be born to the angel choir telling the shepherds that Jesus had finally been born (as well as a couple of more times after that), we read about angels everywhere.

This Sunday we will learn about how angels told Mary and Joseph that God was going to bring Jesus into their home as a baby. What a wonderful message!

Thanks for your help decorating our room for Christmas last week! We had to rearrange things a little to finish it up, but the room looks great.

Bring a friend to enjoy the Christmas season with us this week!

The Greatest Gift

As we begin the Christmas season, our Sunday School sessions will focus on the gift that God has given us…the gift of His only Son, Jesus! (Remember John 3:16, which tells us why God gave us this very special gift.)

This Sunday we will begin 700 years before Jesus was born, as God continued to prepare the world to be ready to receive His gift—this time through the prophets Isaiah and Micah.

There are over 300 prophecies about Jesus in the Old Testament, and we will learn about just a few of them this week. God really wanted us to know that Jesus was the Messiah, the Savior, who would come to save people from their sins.

Let’s all try very hard to keep thinking about Jesus this Christmas season. Sometimes it’s hard, with all the other things that we see and hear and do, but Jesus is what it’s all about.

We will have our Christmas party on December 16, so that would be a great time to invite a friend to come to celebrate with you!

Thanksgiving

This week we take time to say “Thank You!” to God for all the blessings He has given us. Every good and perfect gift, everything that we have, comes from God.

Our Bible story this week is about actually reading the Bible…it doesn’t do us any good for it to sit on a table or a shelf. We need to know what it says…and even more, we need to do what it says! God has given us the Bible so that we know how He has put us together and how to make the most of our lives.

Jesus learned the Bible as a child, along with the other Jewish boys of Nazareth. He did have a special advantage, since He was God’s Son, but the Bible tells us that He became like us in every way, so that He could show us how we could live. So He chose not to use his advantage, but learned the Scriptures the same way we do. Perhaps more important, He promised that the Holy Spirit that He sent to live in us would help us to have the same advantages that He had as Son of God. We are adopted as sons and daughters of God, and the Holy Spirit will enable us and help us to live just as Jesus did.

We are told that it takes repeating an action 21 times to form a habit. Why not promise to read the Bible each day for the next 21 days? You can use the Adventure magazine as a guide to help you read the Bible each day.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving! Take time to tell God some of the things you are especially thankful for. And remember to thank Him for the Bible.

Bring a friend with you Sunday!

God’s Word Can Help Me

Often it is hard to do the right things, the things that please God. But we know that these things are the best for us, and that choosing right will let us have the best possible lives.

This Sunday we will be learning about the very beginning of Jesus’ ministry, when Satan came to tempt Jesus to sin. It was right after John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River.

Satan tried three different ways to get Jesus to sin, but in each case Jesus refused and answered Satan with a verse of the Bible—all out of the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy.

One thing we can learn from Jesus’ example is how important it is to learn and memorize the Bible. That’s why we have a memory verse every week. God promised that if we learn His Word, or hide it in our hearts, the Holy Spirit will bring it to our memory when we need it and help us to not sin against God.

Please remember to bring your decorated Thanksgiving bags Sunday, whether you have any food to bring or not. Our deacons will use our class’s bags to deliver food to needy families, and the decorations will help them think about Thanksgiving and being thankful to God for all His blessings.

See you Sunday—and don’t forget to bring a friend!

God’s Word Is Inspired

Jeremiah was known as the “weeping prophet” because he was always sad…he faithfully told God’s message to the people, but they didn’t want to hear it. His message was actually sad as well…that God would punish the people because they were not following God’s word.

This Sunday we’ll learn how the king of Judah tried to destroy God’s Word through Jeremiah, by cutting it up and burning it. However, God protects His Word! Even though King Jehoiakim, as well as many other people, have tried to destroy it, we still have the Bible today, and we still have the book of Jeremiah’s prophecy.

Join us as we learn the story of Jermiah. We’ll hear the story from James, our computer teacher, and then have a drama so you can act out the story. Hopefully we’ll have time for a treasure-hunt game to help us review what we’ve learned.

Don’t forget to bring your Thanksgiving bags with food for needy families this Thanksgiving! Will the girls or the boys bring in more pounds of food?

See you Sunday…and bring a friend!

God’s Word Is Forever

During the month of November we will be learning about the Bible—a very special book! This Sunday our story is about King Josiah of Judah—who became king when he was just eight years old. He turned out to be one of the very best kings that Judah had, even though his father and grandfather were very wicked kings.

During King Josiah’s reign, an important part of the Bible was found in the temple, after it had been lost for around 100 years. Josiah had never been able to read God’s Word, but when he read this scripture, he realized that he and Judah had not been obeying God’s commandments. He tore his clothes as a sign of sorrow and grief, and assembled all the people so he could read to them this wonderful “new” book.

Although wicked men had neglected and maybe even tried to destroy His word, God preserved it…and He has done the same for thousands of years. God has promised that His Word, the Bible, will last forever.

Remember three things this Sunday:

1) Set your clock back an hour as Daylight Saving Time ends; 2) Bring food (canned goods and staples) in your decorated Thanksgiving bags to share with needy families at Thanksgiving (we’ll weigh it for our contest); 3) Invite a friend to our Friend Day party and pick up your prizes.

See you Sunday!

Worship by Singing

Next Sunday is our last study about worship in church with other Christians. We will be learning about worship by singing, and we’ll do a lot of singing and listening to music. Please bring in your favorite Christian music CD, and we’ll try to listen to as many as we can.

Music is important throughout the Bible. In fact, the book of Psalms is really the Jewish song book! Many of the Psalms were used in worship in the temple.

The event in the Old Testament that we will study is the rebuilding of the temple by Zerubbabel, after its destruction by Nebuchadnezzar of Bablyon. The first thing the Jews did after they were released from captivity was to build the altar and start the daily sacrifices. After they had a chance to build their own homes for shelter, they started on the foundation of the temple, in the same place that Solomon’s temple had stood. When that foundation was finished, they took time to praise God and worship with song and music.

Don’t forget November 4 — it’s time change Sunday (so you get an extra hour of sleep!) but also Friend Day in Sunday School. Bring a friend and you both get to choose from the treasure chest. And everyone present will also get a gift. Our class is having a special party—bring a friend and dress alike (or wear the same color) and join us. You’ll get an invitation in the mail this week, with a card you may use to invite a friend.

Remember that worship is the most important thing that a person can do! Be sure to tell God that you love Him.

I just found your web page. It is great! I would like to know what Bible learning activities you are using each week during the Personalize section. Some of the activities suggested are just not what our kids would enjoy. I keep referring back to previous teacher guides with the same theme and pulling ideas from there. What day do you post the info for the next week?

Tom Cook wrote at 2007-10-25 14:48:

nanato4: I try to update on Monday, but sometimes later. Unfortunately, although I start on Sunday afternoon studying for the following Sunday's lesson, I don't have the learning activities selected until Thursday or Friday for the typical week. This year's group of kids loves games, so we will use those many times if one is in the leader's kit. Last week, for the prayer session, we made "I prayed for you" cards to send to various people in the church.

Are you familiar with Extra! on the LifeWay site? It is often helpful for other ideas. I also pull other ideas from various internet searches on the topic, and frequently we work during that time slot on in-class missions or ministry projects. This week the kids will decorate grocery bags for Thanksgiving food collection.

Perhaps we need another blog just for teachers.

Worship by Praying

Praying to God is important! God wants us to pray to Him, and He does things because we pray that He wouldn’t do otherwise. Our prayer can change things just as much as our actions do.

While there are lots of great ways to pray, the kind of prayer we will be talking about next Sunday is praying in church. It helps us to come together at church, to pray for one another, and to hear others pray. We can support other people’s prayers by silently agreeing with them (“Yes, God, please do what she asks” ) or adding to the prayer (“Yes, God, please bless Susie and her whole family as well” ).

Fourth Graders can pray out loud, too. You don’t have to use any special words or ways of praying. Remember, prayer is talking to God, not to anyone else. And a prayer does not have to be long to be real…it’s more important that you tell God what’s really on your heart, and in your own words.

Sunday we’ll talk about having a P.L.A.N. for prayer…a way to help you think of things to pray about. It stands for:

  • P - Praise God
  • L - List things you are thankful for
  • A - Ask for forgiveness
  • N - Needs of others and of yourself

Hope to see you Sunday—and bring a friend!

Worship by Giving

King Joash was only seven years old when he became King of Judah. When he grew up, one of the best things he did was to repair the temple that his father and grandmother had let go to ruin. He led the people to give their offerings by placing a big chest with a hole in the top in the temple, so that the money could be used to pay all the workers with wood, stone, iron, and precious metals who were able to restore the temple.

Giving to God is an important part of worship. God has given us so much…the Bible says “every good and perfect gift” is from God. We should be very glad that we can give back some of what He has given us to help His church, His missionaries, and to share with others who need help. That’s what’s really happening during the offering time at church.

Think about all the things that the money you bring to church will be doing the next time you drop your offering into the plate (or wherever you place it). It starts out by blessing you when you give to God, because you have a very real part in what He is going in our world.

See you Sunday—and bring a friend along!

Worship God

Worship is an important activity…perhaps the most important thing we can do. One way to think about worship is that it lets us tell about the worth-ship of God. God is worth much more than anyone or anything else. He is perfect in everything that He is or does. His love for each of us is perfect, and His knowledge is perfect. His power is perfect, so we know He can take care of us.

During October, we will be learning from four Old Testament people that we can worship God in many ways, but especially that we can worship God at church. This week we will learn about a king of Judah named Hezekiah (no, there’s no book of the Bible named Hezekiah!). His father had been a bad king and had even swiped some of the gold from the temple to bribe other countries. The temple, where the Jewish people worshiped God, was dirty and broken. Worse, the people were worshiping other gods than the One True God.

When Hezekiah became king, he worked to repair the temple and lead the people back to the worship of the One True God. He was one of the best kings that Judah had.

Come learn with us Sunday about how Hezekiah and the Jewish people worshiped God, and how we can worship Him today with other Christians at church.

Don’t forget to bring a friend!

God our Shepherd

Sheep were pretty important in Bible days. They can live on very poor land if their shepherd helps them find food and water and takes care of them. Lots of people in the Bible were shepherds at one point in their lives…Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and David were just some of them. And Jesus was called “the Good Shepherd.”

This Sunday we’ll learn about Jehovah Rohi, God our Shepherd. David, King of Israel, is the focus of our story. David learned a lot about God as he grew up taking care of his father’s sheep. He wrote the Twenty-Third Psalm (“The Lord is my Shepherd” ) about how God had taken care of David himself as a shepherd takes care of his sheep.

I hope you enjoyed the “silent movies” that we made last week about Naaman. I’m putting them together so you can see the results of your acting this Sunday. They look pretty good!

Bring along a friend to see your talents!

God Our Healer

Another name for God that tells us more about Him is “Jehovah Rophe” — the God who Heals Us. This week we will learn about Naaman, who wasn’t even an Israelite, but who learned about the God who Heals and made a trip to Israel to find healing from his leprosey. One story I found on the internet about Naaman was titled “Seven Ducks in Muddy Water.” Come Sunday to find out why that makes a good title for the story.

Thanks, boys and girls, for learning with us each week…this year’s class is a terrific group, and I appreciate your enthusiasm and attention. We will keep having fun together as we learn about the Bible and about God’s love.

See you Sunday…and don’t forget to invite a friend!

What Is It?

Do you usually like foods you have never tried before? Lots of kids don’t, but often they are missing out on some really great tastes. The Israelites were hungry enough in the wilderness that they didn’t have any problem trying out the new food that God provided for them, but they called it “what is it?” (in Hebrew, that sounds like “manna” ). Next week we’ll learn about the rules that went with this new food from heaven…and how long the Israelites ate it.

Our name of God for this week will be “Jehovah Jireh,” which means in Hebrew, “The Lord our Provider.” You may have heard the song about this name of God, and perhaps we’ll have time to sing it this Sunday. God provided for the needs of the Israelites, and He provides for our needs today, too. As you get ready for Sunday, think about some of the ways God provides for your needs…through nature, through other people, and in many other ways as well.

See you Sunday…and think about inviting a friend!

The Red Sea

It was great to meet many of you last week as we started our new Sunday School year! We hope that more of you can join us, now that Labor Day is over and school is back in session.

Last week we learned about the name God told to Moses, YAHWEH, or “I Am That I Am.” God is eternal—He has always been and He always will be. He had no birthday! It’s awesome to worship and serve such a great and powerful God!

This week we’ll look at God our protector, and another one of the names used for God in the Bible—Elohim. The story is about Moses leading the nation of Israel to cross the Red Sea—you can read all about it in Exodus 14. We’ll take a look at where scholars think the Red Sea crossing actually took place, and at how God protected the Israelites with His awesome power. They were really scared because the Egyptians were chasing them will all the chariots in the whole country, in addition to the 600 “special” chariots. But the Israelites didn’t have to do any fighting…God took care of all they needed and protected them. He protects us today, too—and that’s what we’ll be talking about Sunday,

Hope to see you this week…and you might think about bringing a friend.

Welcome to Fourth Grade!

We welcome a brand new class of Fourth Graders next Sunday! We’re looking foward to a great new year together. Hopefully you already have received your letter telling you that we’re excited that you will be in our class. Don’t forget to bring your information sheet so we can find out more about you.

This month in Fourth Grade Sunday School we’ll be learning about a new subject—the names of God in the Old Testament! You probably know many different names for Jesus, like Wonderful, Counselor, etc. But there are lots of names in the Old Testament for God as well, and we don’t study those very often.

The great thing about names is that they usually tell us something important about the person who has the name…and this is especially true about God. From some of your favorite stories in the Old Testament, we’ll learn five different names of God this month and about what great things they let us know about who God is and what He’s like. It’s awesome!

This Sunday we’ll look at the Hebrew words for the name God told Moses to call Him at the burning bush. Remember that story? We’ll even see how it looks in Hebrew.

We hope you can be with us starting on our very first day…and you can even bring a friend along if you wish! See you Sunday!

Graduation Party

Next Sunday will be the last time our class meets before promotion on September 2, when our fourth graders will move into their new fifth grade class. [There will be no class meeting on August 26 due to the all-church picnic.]

We’re glad you have been with us this past year, and want to celebrate our great time together with a graduation party. You will receive a personalized diploma (to the music “Pomp and Circumstance,” of course) and a CD memento with pictures and videos of our class this past year, plus lots of the games and activities that we have used in class.

We will have refreshments and goodies as well.

Of course, we will be studying the Bible for our last sesson on telling people about Jesus. This Sunday’s theme will be telling the truth…it’s always the right thing to do, and it’s always pleasing to God. We’ll learn about Paul’s arrest in Jerusalem and how he shared all about the time he met Jesus on the road to Damasas…a story Paul loved to tell over and over.

Please come and share this special time of celebration with us. We very much appreciate your being with us in Fourth Grade Sunday School, and wish you the very best as you begin Fifth Grade. Come back and see us now and then!

Tell with Your Actions

Did you know people were watching your actions? What you do—the things you say, the way you treat others, your attitudes and even your smile—make a difference in how other people, adults and children, think about you.

Today’s study, about Paul and Silas in Philippi, is about how our actions can help tell others about Jesus. There is someone around you for whom you are the best Christian they know. Jesus said that, if our lives and actions show His kind of love and joy, others will be attracted to us and want the same kind of abundant life that He came to give everyone.

The way we can help others know Jesus by our actions is really to stay very close to Jesus. We must spend time with Him by reading the Bible, by praying, by learning and worshiping with other Christians. That’s the way you can have the best life yourself, and it will attract others to want to know more about Jesus as well.

Coming Events:

Sunday, August 19, will be our graduation party, with diplomas, gifts, and refreshments. This is mainly for our class, but you can still bring a friend.

Sunday, August 26, is the church Family Reunion, and our Sunday School class will not be meeting. Check out the church web site for details at the Jersey Family Reunion page.

Sunday, September 2, is Promotion Sunday, and all our pupils who have completed Fourth Grade will go to the Fifth Grade class (right next door).

See you Sunday!

Tell What God Has Done

The Bible is the record of God’s revealing Himself to people, beginning in the Garden of Eden, through Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the prophets, and reaching its highest point in the life of Jesus. It records how God worked in history, in the lives of men and women, boys (like Samuel when he was very young) and girls (like Miriam, Moses’ sister) to make sure people could know His message.

God wants to use us, today, to tell others about Him and His story in history. The month of August will find us studying events from the life of Paul, who spend his life traveling around the world telling people about Jesus. This Sunday we’ll be looking at Paul’s first missionary journey, which finds Paul and his friend Barnabas preaching in what was then called Asia (today we know the area as “Turkey” ).

You’ll want to join us as we learn about the dangers that Paul and Barnabas faced, and how they kept on telling people about Jesus.

Don’t forget to bring a friend!

Choose to Forgive

Has anyone ever done anything to you and then apologized—asked you to forgive them? Sometimes it’s hard to do, but it’s always best to choose to forgive. The story we study this week is one of Jesus’ most famous parables, or stories—the Prodigal Son. Join us as we learn from the example of the Father in the story how we can choose to forgive others, no matter what they have done to us.

Don’t forget to sign up for Vacation Bible School—it starts on Monday, July 16. We’re planning a great week as we celebrate Game Day Central—Where Heroes Are Made!

See you Sunday! It would be a great day to bring a friend.

Choices! Choices!

We all make lots of choices every day. Some of them are easy, like what clothes to wear or what to have for breakfast. But some of them can be much harder and very important, like whether I should do what my friends ask me to do, or whether I should obey my parents.

During the month of July we will be getting help from the Bible about making choices. This Sunday (July 1) we will be learning the Golden Rule — where Jesus taught us to treat others as you want to be treated. We’ll look at the iron rule and the silver rule, too…rules that don’t please God but that many people follow.

We will be learning to make choices that please God, that result in the very best consequences, and that will bring us the happiest lives. The Bible is the secret to making the best choices!

You’ll want to be there Sunday…and bring a friend!

God Will Provide for Our Needs

This Sunday we will finish our lessons on prayer as we learn about Hannah, an Old Testament woman who really, really wanted a son. She was very sad because she had no children. While her husband Elkanah was kind to her, his other wife teased her and made her cry.

Hannah went to the tabernacle at Shiloh and prayed that God would give her a son. God answered her prayer, and He has promised to give us the things we need as well…and He has even promised to give us some of the things we want (but don’t necessarily need). The Bible speaks of God’s giving us “the desires of our heart,” mainly when we love God so much that what we desire is the same as what He desires for us (which, after all, is always what’s best for us).

Remember that we will be making gifts for our fathers this Sunday! We’re sorry that we could not be with you last Sunday—we missed you. But hopefully your fathers won’t mind waiting a little for the great gift you will give them.

Also, the treasure chest will be back for you on July 1 — so keep memorizing those verses!

See you Sunday—and bring a friend!

God Can Do Anything!

It is really not surprising that, since God created everything, has all power and all knowledge, and can be everywhere at once, He is able to do anything He chooses. And everything He chooses to do is good, right, and just. It’s really great that, with all this power, God still loves us and wants us to spend time with Him in prayer and worship.

This Sunday we’ll be learning about how King Herod (the grandson of the one who tried to kill Jesus by killing all the babies in Bethlehem) decided to kill Simon Peter, and threw him into a Roman prison. Pretty scarey. But Peter must not have been scared, since he was sleeping so soundly that the angel that God sent to rescue him had to nudge him to wake him up. And the believers in Jerusalem were concerned, but they were praying for Peter’s release from Prison.

And God did it! Two soldiers sleeping next to Peter and chained to him weren’t able to stop him, nor were the other two soldiers outside the prison cell. Peter got up and walked out, with the gate opening by itself. Isn’t God awesome?

Please try to use your prayer journals…just make a note in them from time to time (actually every day is best) about things you would like to pray for. The main thing is to spend time with God, telling Him what’s on your mind, just like you would talk to a friend. The more each of us can do this, the more we will be able to live the way God wants us to live…pleasing to God and best for us, as well.

See you Sunday…and bring a friend!

Talking to God

During June we will be learning about prayer—talking to God! How great it is that God invites us to talk with Him through prayer. It’s a great honor and privilege to communicate directly with the Creator of the universe, and to know that He loves us and wants us to express praise and thanksgiving, bring our requests, and to pray for other people. It is important for us to pray…for prayer changes things!

This Sunday we’ll be learning about the Model Prayer (perhaps you know it as the Lord’s Prayer), which Jesus taught his disciples when they asked Him to teach them how to pray. It will help us, too, to know how to pray as Jesus wants us to.

We’ll be learning more from other Bible characters during the rest of the month. You’ll want to be there every Sunday…and bring a friend!

Help!

Everyone could use some help—especially the other people in our families! That’s one of the great things about families: they help one another, especially in times when someone has a big problem (like illness or making big decisions) but even with the little things (like scratching your back or putting on a bandage).

This Sunday’s story is about Miriam, the older sister of Moses, from the book of Exodus. Miriam was about your age when she helped her mother and baby brother with the scary task of watching over the baby in the basket, floating in the Nile River, to make sure nothing happened to him. Then she was brave enough to talk to the Egyptian Princess (Pharoah’s daughter) and arrange for their mother to take care of Moses for the first three months of his life.

Miriam had an important part in God’s plan to bring the captive Israelites out of slavery in Egypt.

This week I want to read to you a book about Miriam. It is a picture book designed for somewhat younger children, but that means that we will have time to read the whole book and that you can sit back and relax as we learn the story of Miriam. I think it does a good job describing how Miriam helped her brother.

See you Sunday—and bring a friend!

Brothers and Sisters

Next Sunday is Mother’s Day, and our Fourth Graders will be making a special gift for their mothers. Several pupils have already asked if we will be doing that, so they are definitely thinking about how to honor their mothers. And that’s terrific!

In our study this month of our families, and how Old Testament Bible families help us learn how we can support our families, we will actually be learning about brothers and sisters. The story of Jacob and Esau starts out with some pretty serious sibling rivalry, as the two brothers scheme and fight, to the point of Esau’s threatening to kill his twin brother Jacob. But we’ll be focusing on the end of the story, with Jacob and Esau being reconciled after some twenty years of separation. It’s a great ending when Jacob bows down before Esau (seven times—a Bible record!) and Esau hugs and kisses his brother.

No one says that getting along in the family is easy. But God can help us choose to be respectful, forgiving, and considerate of our family members, and help us to see and consider their different viewpoints and needs. A Fourth Grader is in a great position to be able to help her family be a wonderful place to live (just as God meant it to be!).

Tell your mother “Happy Mother’s Day!” and invite her to come to Sunday School this Sunday, too.

My Family

God has given each of us a family. Families come in many shapes and sizes, with different numbers of children and one or two parents. Sometimes we have grandparents or other relative as part of our family. But we all need to get along with our families, know that we can depend on one another when we need love, support, protection, and many other things. We can all be a real part of our families as well, doing our part to love and help each other and make our home a happy one, pleasing to God.

In the month of May we’ll be learning about several Bible famlies, and from them we’ll learn about how children today can help make their families the best they can be. This Sunday we’ll learn about Abraham and his nephew Lot, and how they worked things out when they had arguments. Even though they had some disagreements about whose sheep would get to the best grazing, they discussed the problem and worked out a way to avoid fighting. But they stayed close enough together that they could help each other when there were problems with others.

Start now! Pray for each member of your family—including yourself! That’s one great way to make your family more like God intended it to be.

See you Sunday—and bring a friend!

Jesus Is Alive!

After our celebration of Easter, or Resurrection Sunday, we are looking at several of the reasons we know that Jesus really did arise from the dead. Last week we learned about Cleopas and the other disciple who met Jesus on the evening of the resurrection on the road to Emmaus, walking with Him, talking with Him, and eating with Him. Next Sunday we will learn about the disciples’ seeing Jesus, and especially Thomas, who insisted that he would not believe until he could touch the wounds in Jesus’ hands and side.

Jesus did not scold Thomas, but appeared again about a week later and showed Thomas what he wanted to see. Thomas then said, “My Lord and my God!” — he recognized that Jesus really was alive, and knew for sure that He had risen from the dead.

It’s really great to know for sure that Jesus is alive, and that because He is, we can worship Him and be sure that we can believe in Him and live with Him forever.

See you Sunday—and this would be a great week to bring a friend!

Resurrection Sunday

The Lord is risen! The Lord is risen indeed!

This is the way the early Christians would greet each other and respond. It’s a great way to greet other Christians during the Easter season. We’ll try it out this Sunday, when we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.

We hope you had fun this past week as we learned about Palm Sunday and Jesus’ Triumphal Entry. But that was just the start of the last week of Jesus’ life, and next Sunday we’ll review the events that led up to His crucifixion and resurrection. We will view a video titled “The Story Behind the Cross” from the children’s Visual Bible series, telling about a group of high school students who learn what the cross is really all about. I think you’ll enjoy it!

Hope to see you on Easter Sunday…and it’s a great Sunday to bring a friend to celebrate with you.

Noah and the Flood

You know the story of Noah, and we’ll go into it this coming Sunday. I think you will learn some things you never knew before. To get ready, try answering these questions:

  1. How many human persons were on the ark?
  2. How many of each animal were on the ark?
  3. How long did it rain?
  4. How long were Noah, his family, and the animals on the ark?
  5. What was the first animal to leave the ark?
  6. What was the first thing Noah did after he left the ark?

We’ll be using a video from the Animated Kids’ Bible and some other images to help you understand how big the ark actually was and how the animals might have fit into it.

But the Big Idea for this Sunday is that, just as God took care of Noah, who was following God’s commands, He will take care of us today, especially if we follow God’s commands. Remember, the rainbow is God’s promise…and He always keeps them!

See you Sunday (bring a friend)!

The First Sin

This Sunday we will continue the story of the beginnings — also known as Genesis — with the problems of temptations and disobedience. God created everything, and He created people last. He has a plan for each person, as He did for Adam and Eve. But Adam and Eve did not follow God’s plan, and when that happens, we call it SIN.

Sin is doing and thinking things that God does not want us to, or not doing the things that God does want us to do. Eve ran into that problem with the forbidden fruit (and the Bible doesn’t say it was an apple!). We have the same problem today with other kinds of sins, when we are tempted to disobey parents, to do or say unkind things to others, to lie, to cheat, and so on.

This Sunday we will talk about how we can overcome temptation, with God’s help; and how, when we do sin, God will forgive us when we ask Him.

By the way, if you are interested in the CD game that we used last week, Awesome Bible Stories, you can order a copy from one of my favorite places, Sunday School Software. It is owned by my friend Neil MacQueen in Hilliard, and he has some really excellent Bible CD games available.

See you Sunday — and bring a friend!

The First People
This coming Sunday is (1) Time Change Sunday—don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour Saturday night, or you’ll get to Sunday School late!. (2) F.R.O.G. Sunday—wear something green and thing frogs! Actually it means Fully Rely On God, and we’ll be talking about God’s great plan for our lives. And (3) we’ll be learning about how God created people in His own image.

Think about all the ways that you are like God! You can think, remember, and appreciate beautiful things. You can forgive, feel sympathy, and even create some things. That’s the image of God in you! God is much, much more than you are, but in some very important ways you are like Him, and you can relate to Him and worship Him.

Adam and Eve can help us learn that God has a plan for each of our lives, and that by loving and serving Him we can have the very best lives possible. Come Sunday and help us look into the second chapter of Genesis!

And, of course, don’t forget to bring a friend! All children present Sunday will receive a special F.R.O.G. gift.

In the Beginning…

In March we will be learning about the book of Genesis, the story of beginnings. Next Sunday we will read the story of creation, right from the start: “In the beginning, God created…”

We’ll have a special video summary of God’s creation, and a special presentation from NASA Astronauts. We’ll give you several different approaches to celebrating God’s creation…I think you’ll like them.

But the main thing to remember is that everything was created by God, and we can praise Him and thank Him for it all.

Sunday also starts our Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American missions. Bring an offering to add to our big church bank and help our missionaries around our nation to tell others about Jesus!

March 11 will be the start of Daylight Savings Time, and also our F.R.O.G. (Fully Rely On God) Sunday. Wear something green on that day, invite a friend, and practice your frog calls!

Miracle of Healing: The Man Born Blind

Next Sunday we will learn about how Jesus can heal disease and illness. The story is about a man who had been born blind, whom Jesus and his disiples met in Jerusalem. Jesus made mud and placed it on the blind man’s eyes, and sent him to wash in the Pool of Siloam. The man was healed, and came back to worship Jesus.

If you want some interesting background, take a look at this article about the Pool of Siloam. Just three years ago, archaelogists discovered the Pool of Siloam in Jerusalem, covered over by streets and sidewalks. They have been working to uncover it, and it’s pretty amazing. To the right is a picture of how artists think the pool would have looked in Jesus’ day. You can see how much of it has been uncovered in the web site above.

But the important thing to know is that Jesus loved people, and He was able to heal their physical diseases. The blind man was able to see. God doesn’t heal everyone today, but He does heal some…and He has made our bodies so that they do an amazing job of healing themselves.

We’ll talk more about this Sunday. Try your best to join us—and bring a friend!

Jesus, the Miracle Worker

We traveled last week with Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey. We hope you had fun with the floor puzzle, figuring out the different countnries they visited and told the good news about Jesus. It was interesting to see the video of some of the places that they visited, still there today.

This completes our unit about God’s Church. It’s great to have a church like Jersey where we can come to worship, learn, encourage others and share with one another, and invite our friends to come and hear the good news about Jesus.

Next week we’ll start a new unit about Jesus, the Miracle Worker. Jesus did all kinds of miracles for many reasons, but one reason was to let us be sure that He was God’s Son, and that we can trust Him to love us and take care of our needs.

Also, now would be a great time to invite someone to come with you to our Valentine party on Sunday morning, February 11. We’ll have games, snacks, fun, friends, and learn about the big party Jesus and His disciples threw for over 5000 people!

See you Sunday…

Tell Others About Jesus

Last week we learned about giving…how the believers in the new church in Antioch gave as much as they could to help the church in Jerusalem, since God had told them through the prophet Agabas that a famine was coming. Our giving can help others, here at home and around the world.

We talked about how you children have been able to give to help others in some special ways, by bringing food for needy families at Thanksgiving and by bringing money for the Lottie Moon Christmas offering to support our international missionaries. You’ve done a good job with giving!

This coming Sunday we will be tracing the journey of Paul and Barnabas as they were sent out by the Antioch church to tell people of many other nations the good news of Jesus. Jesus told the early Christians, and He meant it for us, too, to go and tell everyone in the world about the gospel. If each believer does his or her part, God will help us to accomplish that Great Commission.

See you Sunday…we’ll have some special surprised in store for you. A good week to bring a friend…

God’s Church

We have been learning about God’s Church—that it is not a building, but a group of baptized believers in Jesus who meet together to do several things. We learned about the birthday of the church at Pentecost, and about the seven men chosen by the church to help the disciples in serving the people.

Remember, no way can you say “I’m just a kid!” There’s a way for everyone, no matter what age, to help in a church and to serve other members. Our memory verse from last week, “Serve one another through love (Galatians 5:13),” applies to kids as well as adults.

Next week we’ll learn about giving, with some games I think you’ll enjoy. You will be the game-pieces in this room-sized game. And giving is not just about money, but also about your time, talents, and other areas as well.

See you Sunday!

2007 A. D.

As we discussed last week, the number 2007 A. D. for our year means that it is the Year of our Lord (Latin: Anno Domini) 2007, or 2007 years since Jesus was born in Bethlehem. [It does not mean “After Death” as some think.]

In this new Year of our Lord, we will begin by learning about the church. When did it start? What does it mean? What does it do? What is it for?

This Sunday we’ll take a look at the birthday of the church, at Pentecost, when God sent the Holy Spirit that Jesus had promised to the believers in Jesus. Some amazing things happened, and some wonderful things resulted.

We will also look at what the believers in the early church did, and how children today in our class are doing the very same things.

See you there! (…and, of course, don’t forget to bring a friend.)
