The Wise Men Worship Jesus

We hope each of you had a terrific Christmas celebration, as we remembered how Jesus came as a baby to begin His life to show us how God wants us to live and to be our Savior—saving us from death, the penalty of sin.

Next Sunday is the last Sunday of 2006, and we will complete the Christmas lessons by learning about the Magi, or “Wise Men,” who came to worship the child born King of the Jews—Jesus! We will take a look (and sniff!) of the gifts they brought to Jesus, and discuss what the gold, frankincense, and myrrh really meant.

We will be using one of my favorite interactive computer games, Star Seekers, to follow the adventures of three kids who are children of the Magi. It’s an imaginary story, but it contains the real story of how the Magi found and worshiped the baby Jesus. We need your help to “drive” the computer!

We hope you can join us Sunday—but even if you can’t, we wish you a very joyous new year of 2007!

Merry Christmas!

Thank you to all who were able to attend our Christmas party last week! We had a great time making special Christmas ornaments with stars, reminding us of our theme that Jesus is the Star of Christmas. We hope you remember where you can find the Christmas story in your Bible (reminder below).

Next Sunday we’ll be viewing one of my favorite videos, The Story of Christmas from the Visual Bible for Kids series. We will also be learning about Simeon and Anna, who were among the very first people to know that Jesus was the Savior God had promised…when Jesus was just 40 days old!

Even if you’re not able to be with us on Christmas Eve Sunday, we hope that you will have a terrific Christmas celebration with your family and that you will help them all to remember God’s Greatest Gift, Jesus. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…”

Celebrate Jesus!

Last Sunday we learned about two angels announcing that God was about to keep His promise to send the Messiah…and that His name would be Jesus!

This coming Sunday we will celebrate Jesus’ birth with our Christmas party (don’t forget to invite a friend!) and by learning about Jesus’ actual birth, 2007 years ago, in Bethlehem…just as the prophets had promised.

We’ll have a quiz (don’t worry…it will be fun!) to see how much you really know about the Christmas story. Of course, for our party, we’ll have games, refreshments, and fun, too. Have you ever played “Pin the Star on the Christmas Tree”?

Please remember to bring your offering for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions. This is a special time of year to pray for our missionaries around the world and to give to help them have the things they need to tell people about Jesus.

See you Sunday!

The Promise of a Child

We started off the Christmas season last Sunday by learning about the promise God made through the prophets Isaiah and Micah, 700 years before Jesus was born. It was great to check out some of the Old Testament prophecies about the promised Messiah, and how they were fulfilled in the life of Jesus. God promised a Messiah, and the answer to that promise was Jesus!

This Sunday we’ll move forward to just a few months before Jesus was born. We read about angels from time to time in the rest of the Bible, but there are never so many angels as around the time of Jesus’ birth! An angel is a very special creation of God, and serves as a messenger of God.

We’ll talk about angels Sunday, and especially about the angels who told Mary and Joseph about the birth of Jesus. The next week we’ll learn about the most angels ever found in one place at the same time…all with the same message about Jesus’ birth!

Don’t forget your Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, to help our 5000 missionaries around the world in their task of telling all the peoples of the world about Jesus.

See you next week!

Looking forward to Christmas

We had a terrific time in November learning about how great and powerful our God is…and that we can trust Him to love us and care for us. He can do it, since He has all power; and He will do it, because He loves us.

For December we begin to get ready for Christmas, when we celebrate Jesus’ birthday. Next Sunday we’ll start at the beginning of the story, more than seven hundred years before Jesus was born. God made a promise that He kept at Christmas. You won’t want to miss a single Sunday this month, as we learn about the Greatest Gift!

Don’t forget our missions emphasis, as we pray especially for our missionaries who are telling people about Jesus in West Africa. We need to pray, and we also need to give. Our giving to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering will go directly to help our missionaries all around the world, and provide the things they need to do the best job of telling about Jesus.

See you Sunday—and bring a friend!

God Is Powerful!!!

During the month of November, we are learning about the ways God shows His power. We will study David and Goliath; Daniel in the Lions’ Den; Shadrach, Meshech, and Abednego in the Furnace of Fire; and Jonah in the Great Fish. God rescued each one of these people by using His Great Power. As we learned last week, God can do anything!

It’s great to know, love, and serve a God who has all power and who loves us, is kind and merciful to us, and wants to save us from our sins.

Don’t forget to bring food (canned goods, staples, etc.) for the needy families our church will be helping this Thanksgiving! You don’t need the special bags we made, or any bags at all (although it would make the cans easier to carry). We’ll weigh it in Sunday and see which team collects the most weight of food.

Come to Our Party!

Next Sunday, October 29, will be a special Sunday for several reasons. You won’t want to miss it!

First, it’s “time change Sunday” — you get an extra hour of sleep because Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 AM Sunday and we set our clocks back.

Second, it’s the last Sunday of our great unit on “Living Like Jesus,” and we’ll sum up everything we’ve been learning this month about how Jesus helps us to have the best possible lives, lives that are pleasing to God.

Third, it’s our Fall Party Sunday, where we’ll have special games and refreshments to celebrate the terrific kids in our class and give you a good excuse to invite your friends to attend. You should receive a special invitation in the mail, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Living Like Jesus

Why do we want to live like Jesus? Think about it…it’s important to understand the reasons why.

  1. Jesus is God’s Son—really, that means He is God. He lived a perfect life…the kind of life that God intends for everyone to live. Each of us sins: we make wrong choices and want to do “our own thing,” but Jesus never did anything but what God wanted Him to do. He showed us how terrific life could really be.
  2. Jesus loves us. He wants what’s best for us, and He knows that if we live like Him, we will have the very best kind of life and get everything out of our lives that God intends for us to have.
  3. God has a plan for our lives…a plan which will glorify Him and give us meaning and direction. Jesus showed us how to find and follow God’s special plan for our lives by depending on God to guide and direct His life. He said “I only do the things the Father tells Me to do.” Living like Jesus is living in God’s plan.

Next Sunday we’ll learn about serving others, by studying how Jesus served His disciples in a special way.

See you then! And bring a friend.

Forgiving Others

One of the things Jesus talked about a lot was how important it is that we forgive other people. This Sunday, as we learn more about how we can live like Jesus, we’ll be talking about how Jesus forgave a paralyzed man first, and only then showed that He had the power to forgive sins by also telling the man to “take up your mat and walk!”

Doctors tell us that, many times, sickness may come from “holding a grudge,” which means not forgiving other people and wanting to get even with them. We can always choose to forgive others; if we don’t, we can’t have good relationships with God or with other people. We will probably go around with a grumpy attitude which will drive people away, and perhaps have trouble sleeping. And it may cause us to get sick in several different ways.

So forgiving others is really important! God will forgive us of all the sins we have done against Him, and we need to choose to forgive others in the same way.

James and his friend Rebecca will be telling our story this Sunday, about four friends who took their friend to see Jesus — and tore up a roof to do it! This would be a great Sunday for you to bring a friend with you, too. We’ll be hearing some more of the Sunday School Charlie story, too—Charlie will need to learn how to forgive as well.

See you Sunday!

Care Like Jesus

We had a good time with Jesus’ story of the Good Samaritan yesterday—thank you for being with us. Taking care of our neighbor means more than just helping them when they might be sick. Talking about taking care of pets helped us understand some of the different ways we could take care of others—really it’s just helping out with whatever needs people might have. Sometimes it’s when they are sick, hungry, or thirsty, but sometimes it’s just when they need a friend or someone to talk to or listen to. And one of the best ways we can care for others is to invite them to come to Sunday School with us and learn about Jesus!

I hope you enjoyed meeting Sunday School Charlie yesterday. There’s more to his story that we can share. Please let me know if you like him…he and his friends can help us learn how to live like Jesus. It is a good story for this month’s Bible studies.

Don’t forget that next Sunday Miss Julie will bring her “goodie box” around to share with you if you can tell her some of the things we have been studying so far this year. You can tell her about learning how Jesus loved others from the story of the woman a the well, and about how Jesus wants us to care for others like the Good Samaritan did. One good thing to share would be the Golden Rule…”treat others as you want them to treat you.”

Love Like Jesus

We hope you had fun this past Sunday as we learned about how Jesus loved the Samaritan woman at the well, even though no one else in her own town seemed to like her. It’s important that we know Jesus wants us to love everyone…with the kind of “agape” love that chooses to treat others the same way we would like to be treated.

Next Sunday we’ll be learning about the parable of the Good Samaritan…another person from Samaria, but this time the hero of a story told by Jesus to teach us more about how to take care of the people around us who need our help.

We’ll be using one of my favorite CD games on the computer Sunday—“Good Sam, the Samaritan,” which is a game format that I think you’ll like.

I’m also working on a special story that I also think you’ll like. It’s about a boy by the name of “Sunday School Charlie,” a kid much like you, who is going through some of the same things you are in life…problems with other kids, with trying to figure out how to live his life as the Bible teaches, and how to do the things he knows he should. We’ll see how you like Sunday School Charlie, and if you do like him, there’s more to his story that we can learn in the future.

See you Sunday (and don’t forget to bring a friend!).

Living the Jesus Way

Next Sunday starts October, and we’ll be starting a brand new unit about Living Like Jesus. One of the main reasons Jesus came to live on earth was to model for us how we can live in the way God wants us to live. Jesus said that if we look at Him and see His deeds and actions, we are looking at God.

We will be studying this Sunday about LOVE—no, not the ooey-gooey kind of love that you might see on TV or videos, but the extra-special God-style love, called “agape” in the Bible…the kind of love that John 3:16 talks about when it says “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son.”

It’s a kind of love that we can show to others only because God helps us to do that. In fact, our memory verse is “We love because He first loved us.”

We will learn the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman whom He met at a well. No one else in her town loved her, or even liked her…but Jesus did. He took time to speak to her, listen to her, and told her that He could give her “Living Water.” Come join us Sunday to hear the rest of the story…and bring a friend!

Celebrate God’s Word

Thank you, boys and girls, for being in Sunday School during the month of September. We have enjoyed meeting each of you, and also have enjoyed learning together all about God’s Word, the Bible.

We have learned that we should Respect the Bible, Read the Bible, Know the Bible, and Obey the Bible. Our memory verses from Psalms 119 have helped us understand how important hiding God’s word in our hearts really is.

We have made a display of different kinds, versions, and editions of the Bible. We saw examples of how the Jewish people even today reverence God’s word and remind themselves to think about it as they sit at home, as they walk in the street, as they lie down, and as they rise up. We even learned some Hebrew words — the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-5), Mezuzah, and Tefilin.

Remember, the Bible is the book God wrote…and He wrote it for us, so that we could know the very best way to live, to live our lives as God wants us to live, and to get the very most out of our lives.

Remember, we’re praying for each of you. May God bless you richly, and may each of you remember to read His word each day.

Coming Next Sunday: the Shema

For our last lesson on the Bible, God’s Word, we will have a special treat. Rabbi Silverman of Beth Messiah Congregation (a group of Jewish people who believe in Jesus) will let us borrow some very special items that Jewish men use in their daily prayers. These are called “Tefillin”—and I’m pretty sure you’ve never seen anything quite like them before!

Be sure to join us as we study how we should obey God’s Word, and the special verses that Jesus said were the most important commandment in the Bible. It’s called the “Shema” (Hebrew for “hear” ) because that’s the first word in the verse…both in English and in Hebrew!

If you want to read ahead, check it out in the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 6, verses 4-5.

Psalm 119

Do you remember the Psalm our memory verses come from this month? It is the only book in the Bible that has a chapter number as large as 119. And Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the whole Bible! It’s a special Psalm, because each verse in it is about the Bible.

Our memory verses all help us remember that we can respect, read, know, and obey God’s Word, the Bible. Here they are in a helpful summary:

“Lord, Your word is forever.” — Psalm 119:89

“I will delight in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.” — Psalm 119:16

“I have treasured Your word in my heart so that I may not sin against You.” — Psalm 119:11

“Help me understand Your instruction, and I will obey it.” — Psalm 119:34

(These are all from the Holman Christian Standard Bible.)

This would be a good message to print out and use to memorize these verses. That would be a great start to Knowing more of God’s word!

More about the Bible

Thanks, boys and girls, for studying about Ezra and the Bible last Sunday with us. We hope you had fun acting out the worship experience that the Israelites had, especially with the special prayer shawl that Pastor John let us borrow.

We have talked about how we can Respect the Word and Read the Word. Next Sunday we’ll be talking about how to Know the Word. Our story will be about Jesus, right at the beginning of His ministry, when He was tempted by the devil. We’ll learn about what temptation is, and how each of us faces it today. But the good news is that we can resist the devil and temptation just like Jesus did, by learning God’s Word and knowing the right thing to do.

This Sunday you’ll meet our Computer Teacher, James. I think you’ll like the way he teaches our Bible story, complete with pictures.

See you Sunday! Why not bring a friend with you?

Ezra Read the Bible

Tomorrow we’ll be studying about how the Priest and Scribe Ezra read the Books of Moses (that’s the first five books of the Bible) to the people of Israel in Jerusalem. They had been captives in Babylon for 70 years, so many had forgotten about God’s Word (and had even forgotten how to read Hebrew, the language the Bible was written in.

Although the people were sad at first, because they had not been keeping God’s Word, Nehemiah and Ezra told them that this was a time for celebration, because now they knew God’s Word!

If you want a head start, you can check out the story in the book of Nehemiah, chapter 8.

You might want to practice our memory verse as well. It’s again from the longest chapter in the Bible, Psalm 119, verse 16: “I will delight in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.”

See you tommorrow!

Off to a Great Start!

Thank you, boys and girls, for being in our class this past Sunday. It was great to meet each of you. We’re looking forward to a terrific year as we learn about the Bible together.

We hope you had fun with our “treasure hunt” and as we learned about how the Bible is a “treasure,” the “Word of God,” and will last “forever.” We heard how King Josiah respected the Bible and promised to follow God’s rules, just as we can today.

We expect more kids will be there next week, now that Labor Day is over. Our subject will be “Read the Bible,” and we will learn how the Priest Ezra did just that—and how the people responded. We will put on a drama to help us learn what happened…I just hope you don’t get too dizzy!

Hope to see you there Sunday—and please remember to bring your Bibles (almost everyone brought their own Bible last week—you did a great job!).

Thursday Update

What’s planned for this Sunday (9/3/06):

We’re going to start out, right on time at 9:45, with our Power Up! activity—a Treasure Hunt! You’ll want to be on hand to share in the treasure we discover.

Our Bible story will be about King Josiah and the Lost Book. We’ll learn about how King Josiah thought the Bible was a special treasure, and how the people of Israel promised to keep God’s laws and claim His promises.

We’ll be making a special display showing the wonderful ways that the Bible has come down to us through the ages (some 4000 years!). God wrote a book, and He has protected it year after year so that we can read it today.

Don’t forget to bring your own Bible (although we’ll have one you can borrow if needed). Our memory verse will be from the longest chapter in the whole Bible (don’t worry—you don’t have to memorize the whole chapter). And we’ll try to take pictures of everyone so we can use them in weeks to come on our class computer.

We’re looking forward to meeting all our new Fourth Graders! See you there!

Respect the Bible

This Sunday, September 3, we will be starting a new unit of study on the Bible. The story today will be about King Josiah and his respect for the Bible. King Josiah was about your age when he became king of Israel, and he was one of the best kings of all.

If you want to get ready for Sunday, you can read the story of King Josiah in 2 Kings 22-23:3. Watch for the names of some special people in this story—we’ll learn more about them Sunday:

  • King Josiah
  • Shaphan
  • Hilkiah
  • Huldah

Welcome, New Fourth Graders!

We’re all set to welcome our new class of Fourth Graders to a great new year of fun and learning. We’ll all be wearing our “Jesus Brightens My Day” nametags the first few Sundays so we can get to know one another. Look for your name by the door to our room, 4017, as well as the “Fourth Grade” sign.

We will be studying all about the Bible itself in the month of September…how to respect it, read it, learn it, and obey it. After all, the Bible is the Word of God…His special letter to us telling us that He loves us, wants the best for us, and telling us how to live to get the best out of our lives. When we read, learn, and obey the Bible, we will have the best lives possible. I like to think of it as an “instruction manual” for living.

See you Sunday at 9:45!

Sunday 8-27 is Graduation Day!

You won’t want to miss the last day of our Sunday School year on August 27. Not only will we have a great lesson from the Bible about Saul’s vision on the Road to Damascus, but we will also have our graduation ceremony.

Each pupil will recieve a personalized diploma (presented with a handshake to the music “Pomp and Circumstance,” of course!) and a CD with the pictures, videos, games, and stories we have taken this year. Hopefully it will help you recall happy memories of Fourth Grade Sunday School.

Starting in September, our Fourth Graders will officially become Fifth Graders and move to Fifth Grade Sunday School. It’s in the room right next door, so you can still come by and say “Hi” once in a while (and maybe even give us a hug).

This year’s class is a great group, and we look forward to seeing how God will use the terrific gifts and talents He has given to each of you in the years ahead.
