I will also add a copy of my article in Growing Churches magazine which has a specific example (albeit a competition with other churches) but also includes a summary of the principles involved.

Basically, what you need to include are:

Lots of involvement of SS leadership and pupils in planning and conducting the event
Excitement and Motivation consistent with the personality of your church
Good up-front, high visibility publicity including commitment from your members to invite absentees and prospects
Recognition of those who participate and do a good job, in keeping with your theme and church personality
Followup with contacts to guests and infrequent attenders to conserve results
