Major on Ongoing Sunday School Program
Match Your Church’s Personality
Magnify People, not the Goal
Don’t Escalate to Extravagance
Special events are no substitute for a strong, effective ongoing Sunday School program. You may be able to get people to attend on one special Sunday, but they must experience consistent, solid, relevant Bible teaching and ongoing caring ministry to their felt needs if they are going to continue. Due diligence to building the right organization for your church and staffing it with competent, dedicated teachers through proper enlistment, training, and support are foundational to Sunday School growth. Without this, you’re spinning your wheels if you try single-event promotions.
The event suggestions in this presentation are ideas only. They work for Jersey because of who we are and what we’re used to. Not all approaches will work for your church. Use diligent prayer; your own knowledge of your people, resources, and situation; and counsel from key leadership and membership to fit the principles to your specific congregation.
Especially if competition is involved, be careful to maintain the promotion on the proper spiritual level. At Jersey, we enjoy the competitive spirit, but we’re careful to report and rejoice about the victories of other churches as well. Our fun is carefully kept to within the metaphor of the theme, while we keep the higher purposes before our people constantly. People come first!
Take care of the details for your High Attendance Sunday: make sure you have enough parking, chairs, and quarterlies; plan for extra greeters and ushers; be ready to receive, register, and welcome visitors.
